I recently discovered the work of photographer Martina Hoogland Ivanow. Whether shooting people, landscapes or fashion, there is a consistent style that evokes the dreamy spirit of a Tarkovsky film. See more of her work here and here.

I thought it appropriate on Halloween to share the gruesome delicacies from a Bangkok based bakery that make confections that look more like special FX props from horror movie sets than food. Warning this is not for the squeamish.

Today, two master-butchers will be carving up a pig at the New Amsterdam Market at the site of the old Fulton Fish Market. For more on the growing popularity of learning the butchering trade as a hobby, check out this piece from this weekend’s NY TImes.

I’ve been hearing a lot about the work of Joel Buliewicz lately. He makes handmade one of a kind kitchen knives out of his boutique Cut Brooklyn. Check out his story here and learn a thing or two about knives.

A friend of mine who I haven’t seen in sometime just shared this with me. He provided the soundtrack which accompanies Conor Oberst Sex, a short ebook which is also available online for free. Whether or not this story is based on any truth involving Mr. Bright Eyes himself is kind of irrelevant. The story imagines a quick intimate relationship with Connor Oberst or any object of desire for that matter. I found it to be a nice little read and really like the idea of including a soundtrack with a story.

I don’t speak Turkish, so I’m not entirely sure what this visually striking commercial is about. I’d venture the guess that the message has something to do with breaking out of the proverbial box.

The story of Germany’s invasion of Ukraine during WWII is told in this astonishing real-time evolving sand painting. My mind is thoroughly blown.

Watching the trailer for Mutiny Bikes - Let’s Get Mystical makes me wish I had learned to do just a few BMX tricks. Sadly, I couldn’t because I did a nice thing and lent my brand new Haro to a friend as a kid; he managed to leave it at another kid’s house where it was stolen from the drive way. You still owe me Brian Getz and yes, I’m still salty about it.

I’ve been making my way through Six Feet Under DVDs and it is quite clear to me that there is absolutely nothing about a funeral home that is comforting. Should I cross the street and get hit by a bus tomorrow, let it be known that there should be no casket for me. Just to be a pain in the ass, I might like to be flash-frozen and then blasted with an ultrasound wave into a million pieces. But that doesn’t sound very practical; I guess cremation it is then. Check out this nice little NPR piece on burial.

This chart helps to illustrate the serious differences between Arial and Helvetica. If you think you can tell the difference, try testing your knowledge by guessing which of the iconic logos is the original Helvetica form. I only got one wrong - not bad.

Kooky people with kooky obsessions and hobbies like the fellow in my previous post make me happy. I truly admire the spirit of people who live life marching to the beat of another drummer, even when that means driving a car that looks like a giant telephone. Here is the trailer for Automorphosis, a documentary on art car enthusiasts. On a similar note - check this out.

I remember once seeing something on TV about a woman who can swim long distances in extremely cold water. In fact, she successfully swam a mile in the frozen waters of the Antarctic wearing only the usual swim suite, goggles and cap. This ability is absolutely rare. I thought of her when I heard about the subject of Thomas Hilland’s short documentary Sweat - Timo Kaukonen is a four-time World Sauna Champion who enjoys sitting in the extreme heat that would cause other people serious skin burns.

It’s been just over two decades since Living Colour’s anthem, Cult of Personality scorched the airwaves introducing us to a new sound. A young teen at the time, I was obsessed with Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Parliament Funkadelic and Bad Brains - pioneers of sound. Living Colour mashed all of these elements together and served up something completely other-worldly that would eventually inspire a whole new generation of musicians. The band were recently musical guests on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon where they performed their first single in many years, Behind the Sun and also treated the audience to a fiery rendition of Cult of Personality.  Read more about Living Colour’s past and present here.

The Golden Age of Soccer is a captivating documentary film on a semi-professional league based out of Corona Park in Queens, New York. Many of the players who are middle aged men have played professionally in their homelands. Some have even competed in the World Cup. They are just as passionate about the game as when they were younger men. Check out the trailer or see the film here.
